2019 Barn Dance, Mourvèdre, Lime Kiln Valley, Enz Vineyard

If you're looking for a rootin', tootin' good time, get yourself a bottle of Barn Dance, an old-vine Mourvèdre serving up honky-tonk vibes.

The term "Barn Dance" typically refers to a community or family gathering involving dancing to folk music. As Barn Dances gained popularity in the US, radio shows began to run their own version of a Barn Dance in a one-hour radio show, which helped lead to the rise of country music. Fun fact: The Grande Ole Opry originated from a Barn Dance radio show on WSM. Our label features an old, worn-out Barn Dance poster highlighting the band, The Roadrunners. We don't know who The Roadrunners were, but we bet they were a hit!

Sourced from Enz Vineyard in Lime Kiln Valley, the vines for this Mourvèdre date back to the 1920s. We love old vines for the rich and flavorful wines they produce. Because of their age, old vine's roots reach deep into the soil, which means they're less susceptible to drought and vintage variation. Most vineyards tend to replant their vines after 15-25 years, so our ability to source grapes from nearly 100-year-old vines is something truly extraordinary.

If you didn't know, our winemaker's favorite variety is Mourvèdre, and for good reason. Similar to Cabernet Sauvignon, Mourvèdre is a full-bodied red with great acidity. Its meaty quality with berry-like flavors make it a great food wine, and it ages quite well. The grapes for Barn Dance were harvested in early October 2019. With cooler temperatures over the course of the vintage and longer hang time, these grapes had amazing depth of flavor.

We foot-stomped 50% of the grapes whole cluster, and the remaining were destemmed and fermented on the skins for 25 days. Afterward, the wine two-stepped its way into neutral oak barrels to develop over the coming months. This wine is extra near and dear to our hearts, as it was the first wine to be bottled using our own line! We typically work with local bottling companies who bring the machinery to our winemaking facility, and after years of waiting, we finally have our own.

So, what does it taste like? This wine is fresh and textural in all the best ways. The nose is chock full of ripe cherry, huckleberry and raspberry notes with a bit of leather and cinnamon spice mixed in. On the palate, the red fruit carries over with cranberry tart acidity, a touch of bay leaf and amazing minerality, due in part to the limestone and granite soils found at Enz Vineyard. With incredible texture across the mid-palate and a long, lingering finish, we can't get enough of this wine.
